Python dir() Function

The dir() function in Python returns all the properties and methods of a specified object. For example:

x = [1, 2, 3]
print(dir(x))

x = "Python Programming"
print(dir(x))

class CodesCracker:
    id = 134
    name = "Richard"
    country = "Argentina"

print(dir(CodesCracker))

The output would be:

Python dir() Function Syntax

The syntax of dir() function in Python, is:

dir(obj)

where obj refers to the object whose properties and methods are going to return by the function dir(). The obj parameter is optional. Therefore if no parameter is passed to dir(), then it will return the names available in current local scope. For example, the following code:

print(dir())

produces:

['__annotations__', '__builtins__', '__cached__', '__doc__', '__file__', '__loader__', '__name__', '__package__', '__spec__']

Python dir() Function Example

Here is an example of dir() function in Python. This program demonstrates that if the __dir__() function is already defined in a class, then calling dir() for an object instance of the same class, will call this function.

class CodesCracker:
    def __dir__(self):
        mylist = ["Fri", "Nov"]
        return mylist

today = CodesCracker()
print(dir(today))

The output would be:

['Fri', 'Nov']
